Paros

Unthinkable natural beauty, incredible sun light, relaxing atmosphere, warm people, the sandy beaches with crystal clear waters, ancient monuments, original Byzantine footpaths connecting traditional villages and breathtaking landscapes make Paros island one of the best destinations for holidays in Greece.

Parikia, the capital of Paros Island, is a beautiful Cycladic village with whitewashed or stone cubic houses and impressive neoclassical villas. A well preserved 13th century Venetian castle stands glorious on a hill at the center of the village. In the capital you can also admire one of the most important ecclesiastical monuments of the 6th century, the church of Panagia Ekatotapiliani, which means the church with 100 gates and is considered as the most important Byzantine monument of Greece. This church has been built from Saint Helen, mother of Constantine the Great. Don’t miss the chance to visit the baptistery (4th century AD), one of the best preserved baptisteries in the Greek Orthodox Church, and the Byzantine Museum. The Archaeological Museum displays various exhibits from the island’s monuments such as the Sanctuary of Asklipios and Pythios Apollon, Delion etc.

The marble quarries at Marathi, where the famous Parian marble used to be extracted, were in operation from the 3rd millennium BC up to the 19th century. Some of the most famous sculptures in the world were made from that marble. The mining galleries along with remains are still preserved and can be visited!
